Coalitions
While individual organizations or champions may be influential independently, when diverse groups collaborate and advocate as one, the effect can be exponential. Below are examples of advocacy campaigns born out of public-private coalitions:
EXPECT MORE ARIZONA
In May 2009, Expect More Arizona – a public-private partnership dedicated to increasing public awareness about the importance of strengthening education in Arizona first conceived by the Governor’s P-20 Council – was launched. At the heart of this campaign is www.ExpectMoreArizona.org, a robust website that provides key information about Arizona’s education system and what can be done to improve it. The campaign also includes a significant public awareness element, with television, radio, print and out-of-home advertising to bolster support for education reform. With leaders from Arizona’s pre-K, K-12, postsecondary, business, and philanthropic communities on board as funders or supporters, Expect More Arizona represents a coalition of coalitions, bringing together education advocates under a single tent.
ConnCAN
Founded in January 2005, the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN) is a nonprofit comprised of education entrepreneurs from around the state who strive to close the achievement gap through innovative educational models and issue-based advocacy. Using its principles of “Greater Choices,” “Greater Accountability,” and “Greater Flexibility,” ConnCAN believes that correct state policy can transform Connecticut’s education system through research, mobilization, and advocacy. Based on ConnCAN’s success, the coalition helped launch 50CAN, the 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now. 50CAN launched RI-CAN and MinnCAN and plans to launch two more campaigns this Fall: Maryland-CAN and New York-CAN. 50-CAN's goal is to launch an additional ten state campaigns within the next three years and reach half of the country by 2015.
NATIONAL COALITION FOR COLLEGE COMPLETION
The National Coalition for College Completion is a diverse, nonpartisan group representing business, civil rights, community-based, student and youth advocacy organizations that supports federal and state programs, policies and funding to increase college completion. NCCC specifically urges support for promising practices within higher education institutions, states and communities that are transforming the postsecondary experience to better support today’s students. The Coalition's website features promising practices and a "Mobilization Toolkit."
OKLAHOMA BUSINESS EDUCATION COALITION
Oklahoma Business & Education Coalition (OBEC) is a nonprofit organization to build and help implement a plan to improve public education in Oklahoma, supported by over twenty of Oklahoma’s large companies and chambers of commerce. Soon after its formation in 2000, OBEC initiated an advocacy campaign urging the state to raise its standards and expectations for all students, using research to illustrate how the state stood to benefit from increasing the quality and level of education of its citizens. OBEC’s advocacy for higher standards, coupled with its on-the-ground work through Oklahoma Scholars, helped lay the groundwork for sweeping education reform – the Achieve Classroom Excellence (ACE) legislation.
TENNESSEE STATE COLLABORATIVE ON REFORMING EDUCATION
The State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with the mission of working with state and local governments in Tennessee to encourage sound policy decisions in public education, and to advance innovative reform on a statewide basis. SCORE serves as a resource for information on state-level education reform. SCORE is governed by a 14-member board of directors comprised of Tennessee philanthropic and business leaders who care about public education; SCORE’s work is also guided by a 28-member steering committee comprised of the state’s top education leaders. Together, the board and the steering committee help ensure SCORE is at the center of a statewide coalition in support of rigorous education reform. SCORE also launched Expect More, Achieve More, a communications campaign to build support for Tennessee’s new, higher academic standards.
