There are few institutions in the United States as large and diverse as our public education system.
As of 2009, for example, the public K-12 system included more than 17,800 districts educating more than 49 million students, which accounts for about 16 percent of the US population. Below is a fact sheet providing some basic facts about public education in the U.S. and its structure.
